Question What is A tome?

Yes, I'm a noob. I was looking up information of how to upgrade things, get bettter skills, etc., and kept coming across the suggstion of using tomes. I did a search and see a lot of threads about obstaining tomes, using tomes, but nothing that tells me what exactly a tome is. Can anyone be more specific?

Thanks in advance.

Each profession has an elite and non-elite skill tome that allows the character who reads it to learn a skill for that profession that they have already unlocked elsewhere for the account. Skill tomes can stack with others of the same type and profession. It does not cost a skill point to learn a skill using a skill tome.

Skill tomes can only be used while in a town or outpost, not while in an explorable area.

You must first have the skill unlocked in order to learn it, you can achieve this by earn balthazar points in any pvp arena then using those points at the priest of balthazar to unlock the skill. Once the skill is unlocked you can use your tome to so your character can learn it. It is Cheaper to use tomes instead of purchasing skills once it cost 1 platinum to buy a skill(each time you purchase a skill from the skill trainer the price goes up and maxes out at 1,000 gp). Tomes range from 200-900gp depending on class, while monk is normally the most expensive. If you would like to purchase tombs you can do so at any of the major hubs, i.e.Kamadan, Kaineng Center Center, Lions Arch, Eye of the North.

Check this thread for current prices.

Also, Elite tomes can be very useful if you need an elite skill right away and due not have the time to cap the skill yourself, Personally I always try to cap the skill unless I need it asap for a pvp game or a difficult mission and have players waiting.

Hope that helps

Finally someone who don't spell tome as tomb... as a tomb is something entirely different. Kinda strange: WTB Ranger Tomb. Kinda funny if ya think a little

Anyway, for all info about GW. gw.gamewikis.org is your friend

From dictionary.reference.com

Tome, noun: a book, esp. a very heavy, large, or learned book.

Tomb, noun: an excavation in earth or rock for the burial of a corpse; grave.

Thank you for your responses. Right now, I'm paying 1k to the skill trainers for new skills, and it would be nice to find a few of these tomes. Do they start to randomly drop in certain areas, or after you have reached a certain level? I have never come across one for my lvl 20 Monk.

Oh, ok. I'm not in hard mode so I guess they won't do me any good. Too bad because it costs me a fortune to buy new skills now.

You can buy tomes from players too, they're usually 300-500g from my experience, so much cheaper than the trainer.

Misleading.

A tome is a one time use item that allows the character that uses it to learn a skill already unlocked on your account.

And the tome that drops is linked to the profession of the monster that is killed. For example, kill a monk and you get a chance of a monk tome dropping, etc, etc. The elite versions also only drop from killing bosses or a random drop from chests.

So that's it, in a nutshell. Tomes drop:
  • In Hard Mode
  • From mobs of that class (Monk tomes from Monk mobs, etc.)
  • Elite Tomes drop from bosses
  • Also drop from Hard Mode chests

We're done here
